SE England Mid Amateur Championship held at Rochester & Cobham Park Golf Club, Rochester, Kent.  Thursday 5th July 2011.

57 players contested the first in a series of events organised by Kent based Wyncanton Marketing Services in conjunction with a new web site Mid Amateur Golf – www.midamgolf.co.uk.

Players came from all over the South East of England and the standard was extremely high with handicaps ranging from plus 3 through to 7.

Current English Mid Amateur Champion (Logan Trophy) Danny Holmes was in attendance as were other notable “Mid Amateurs” including Mark Wharton, Danny Curtis, Terry Crawley, Andrew Inglis, Neill Williams and also former England International Ed Richardson.  Ed has been away from the game for over 2 years battling against ill health so it was great to see him back playing again.

The course had been set up to test the players but the green keeper was obviously trying to defend his course and used the toughest of the clubs British Open Regional Qualifying pin positions and as a result the players found the going a little tough to say the least.

There were however some good scores in the morning – Rochester member Bob Florence fired a 72, Ed Richardson had a great round of 70, Neill Williams had 69, Danny Curtis had 70, Danny Holmes was disappointed with his 74 but the leader after 18 holes was Jonathan Collier with an impressive 69, 3 under par.

The afternoon rounds got underway in some welcome sunshine and again some of the lower handicappers got to grips with the course and Danny Holmes turned after the 9th 4 under par and in contention.  Danny Curtis was also trying to keep in touch after his morning round of 70 but it looked like the leader after the morning round, Jonathan was struggling.  Going along quietly was Neill Williams from Walton Heath who after a morning round of 69 was looking to upset the local favourites.

Eventually the players completed their afternoon rounds with Cobham member David Jessup Jnr shooting a 71, Danny Holmes had a great round of 69 and Ed Richardson fell away with a 73.  A great effort by Ed however to complete both rounds and we look forward to seeing him playing more often.  Neill Williams followed up his morning round of 69 with a solid 70 to finish the tournament on 139, 3 under par and claim the title of South East of England Mid Amateur Champion 2011 from Danny Holmes who finished second on 143.
